Yoga and Christianity

Category:

Hello:

I've been training to teach Yoga and recently spoke with the pastor from my church about it, and he was concerned. I'd like to know what you think about this, as I LOVE yoga and do not wish to give it up unless I'm completely sure that there is a conflict with my Christian faith.

Vegetarianism Joint Pain

Category:

David

Hi again.

I hope you were not just being polite when you said I should stay in touch. My wife and I went veggie in February. I am getting some soreness in some of my joints (starting about 6 weeks ago) and I was hoping you might have an idea or two on what I should eat to correct that. My wife is not having any problems and we are eating about the same things.

With love and respect,

M

Thoughts on Breath and the Mind

Dear David,

I took your teacher training and have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to and am hoping that you can help me. In addition to teaching yoga I also train people with weights. During one session my client chose to use ujjayi breathing while lifting weights. She found this to be helpful in having more energy to continue. She wondered why and what the physiological reason for this was.

Can you explain to me the physiological reason and effects of this process?

Thank you so much...

Shoulder Soreness

Category:

David

I recently purchased the First Series video. It is wonderful. I enjoy my practice and look forward to each day's practice. I just developed soreness in my left shoulder - the front part. I'm pretty sure it comes from over doing things as I do the opening sun salutations. Do you have any advice to calm it down? I think skipping the sun salutations is the wrong thing to do, but I don't want to keep aggravating it.

Sincerely,

D

Ashtanga Yoga During Pregnancy

Hi David and Shelley!

I hope all is well with you two. I took your weekend workshop and my son played a lot with Shelley the first night that he stayed at the studio during the class. He told me to send a special hello and a "jump into janushirsasana (pardon the spelling)" for you and Shelley.

Ashtanga Yoga and Breast Cancer

Category:

Hi David,

Hope this finds you well and happy. Time sure has a habit of slipping by doesn't it?

I just found out that my breast cancer has returned, after a remission of 7 years. This is the second recurrence; I originally had a lumpectomy and chemo in 1984, followed by a wider lumpectomy in 1995. This time, they obviously want to do a mastectomy (which seems sensible, as there'd be practically no boob left with another lumpectomy) followed probably by chemo/tamoxifen. All a drag, of course, but I've been through it twice so expect to get through it again.

Ashtanga and Parkinson's

Category:

Hi David,

I have just started enjoying Ashtanga Yoga, and I had a question:

My friend has Parkinson's disease and his doctor recommended that he begin taking some low impact aerobic classes, I was wondering if you consider Ashtanga to be aerobic? He currently practices Tai Chi and Chi Gong and when I described my Ashtanga Yoga experience he thought it might be a nice alternative option.

Thanks for your input.
