Ashtanga and Cardiovascular Health & Coronary Heart Disease

David,

I had the good fortune to meet you in a recent workshop. I'd be very grateful for your advice.

I am prompted to ask for your help having had a heart attack 3 months ago followed by a surgery. I've been a student of Iyengar yoga for 5 years and 3 years ago discovered the joys of Ashtanga, slowly building a regular practice 3-4 times a week while also pursuing a basic Iyengar teacher training. I'll be 54 years old in January. My herbal doctor is also concerned about the heat created by the Ujjayi breath.

Ashtanga and Ashtma

David,

Asthma - I have a student who is asthmatic and struggles to get full, deep breaths. I encourage her to continue her work on breathing into her lungs, chest, side and back. I have had some pranayama exercises to offer. I just wondered if you encountered this and have any specific suggestions I should consider.

Dear K,

Ashtanga and Age

Namaste David:

I want to ask you if one is 47 years of age and in good health condition is it possible to practice ashtanga yoga even if you're not that flexible? I have been practicing vinyasa for the last 5 - 6 years. I can do most asanas very well but some like the full-lotus or pigeon I still cannot do fully but I continue to work on them. So is it possible to practice ashtanga (at least finish the entire primary series)?

Thanks

S.
