Balancing Side Stretch and Deep Fold: Exploring Lateral Pose and Plow Pose in Yoga

A well-rounded yoga practice doesn’t just move you forward and back, it also invites you to explore the body side to side and upside down. Two powerful yet very different shapes are a lateral pose (a side-bending posture) and plow pose in yoga (Halasana), a deep inversion and forward fold.

Together, they help create a more supple spine, open breath, and grounded nervous system.

What Is a Lateral Pose?

A lateral pose is any posture that creates a side bend through the torso rather than a forward fold or backbend. Think of shapes like a standing side stretch, gate pose, or seated side bend. In these postures, one side of the ribs lengthens while the other side gently compresses.

Benefits of yoga practicing a lateral pose include:

  • Opening the side body and ribcage
  • Creating more space for the breath
  • Relieving stiffness around the waist and lower back
  • Bringing awareness to imbalances between the right and left sides

You can add a simple lateral pose into almost any sequence as a way to “un-crunch” the body from long periods of sitting or hunching forward.

What Is Plow Pose in Yoga?

Plow pose in yoga, or Halasana, is a deeper posture often practiced near the end of a sequence. From Shoulder Stand or lying on your back, you gently lift your hips and bring your feet overhead, aiming them toward or beyond the crown of the head (with appropriate support and caution).

Benefits of plow pose in yoga may include:

  • Stretching the entire back body, from neck and shoulders down through the spine
  • Calming the nervous system when practiced gently and mindfully
  • Supporting circulation and a sense of “reset” after an active yoga practice

Because it places weight on the neck and upper spine, plow pose in yoga should be approached slowly, with props if needed, and avoided if you have neck injuries or certain medical conditions. When in doubt, work with a qualified teacher.

How Lateral Pose and Plow Pose Work Together

At first glance, a lateral pose and plow pose in yoga seem unrelated: one is a side stretch, the other a deep inversion and forward fold. But they complement each other beautifully:

  • Lateral work helps create side-to-side freedom in the spine and ribcage.
  • Plow adds length along the back body and invites a quieter, inward-focused state.

A simple sequence might look like this:

  1. Warm up with gentle lateral pose variations on both sides.
  2. Move through a few standing postures and forward folds.
  3. Finish with a supported version of plow pose in yoga, followed by a gentle counterpose (like knees-to-chest or a soft twist).

In this way, you explore the spine in multiple directions, supporting both mobility and calm. Over time, these two shapes remind you that yoga isn’t just about dramatic poses, it’s about creating balanced space in your body, breath, and mind, one thoughtful movement at a time.
