Crow Pose and Plow Pose

Crow Pose and Plow Pose: Strength Up Front, Stillness at the End

Some postures ask you to meet yourself in the moment. Crow Pose is one of them, direct, focused, and honest. It doesn’t reward rushing. It rewards attention: hands grounded, breath steady, mind clear. Then, when the effort is done, Plow Pose offers a different kind of depth, quiet, inward, and restorative when approached with care.

This pairing works well because it balances activation with release. You build heat and confidence, then soften into stillness.

Crow Pose: A Compact Shape with Big Benefits

Crow Pose (Bakasana) strengthens the wrists, arms, shoulders, and core while training your gaze and breath under pressure.

How to practice Crow Pose

  • Start in a squat, feet together or slightly apart, hands flat on the mat shoulder-width.
  • Spread fingers wide and press firmly through the knuckles.
  • Place knees high on the backs of the upper arms, squeeze in.
  • Shift weight forward slowly until the toes feel light.
  • Lift one foot, then the other, aim for 2–5 steady breaths.

Helpful tips

If you feel stuck, place a block under your feet to elevate your hips, or stack a blanket in front of you so you can explore the forward shift without fear. Keep the gaze slightly forward, not down, this helps the chest stay lifted.

Plow Pose: A Deep Fold for the Back Body

Plow Pose (Halasana) can feel deeply calming, lengthening the spine and hamstrings while encouraging slower breathing. It should never feel like pressure in the neck.

How to practice Plow Pose

  • Lie on your back and take a full breath cycle to settle.
  • Lift legs up, then roll hips overhead with control.
  • Support the lower back with hands, or keep arms long on the mat.
  • Rest toes on the floor behind you if reachable, otherwise use a chair or blocks.
  • Hold 3-6 breaths, keeping weight in the shoulders, not the neck.

Safer setup

A folded blanket under the shoulders can create more space for the neck. If you have neck sensitivity or anything feels sharp, choose a supported version or skip it.
