Sphinx Pose and the Throath Chakra

Sphinx Pose and the Throat Chakra Connection

Some postures speak quietly and do their work without drama. Sphinx Pose is one of them. Simple in appearance, profound in effect, it offers practitioners a grounded way to begin opening the front body while inviting something deeper: a clearer connection to the Throat Chakra and the subtle energy that lives there.

Why Sphinx Pose Deserves More Attention

In a yoga practice as dynamic as Ashtanga, the gentler postures can get overlooked. Sphinx Pose asks the body to slow down and meet the earth with full presence. Lying face down, forearms flat on the mat, the chest lifts with each inhale while the lumbar spine receives a soft, sustained opening. There is no forcing here. The pose rewards patience.

For students preparing for the deeper backbends of the Intermediate Series such as Salabhasana or Dhanurasana, Sphinx Pose builds the foundational awareness that more demanding postures require. It teaches the chest to open before the lower back is asked to do all the work.

Sphinx Pose and the Energy of Vishuddha

The Throat Chakra, known in Sanskrit as Vishuddha Chakra, governs authentic expression, clear communication, and the courage to speak one's truth. Located at the base of the throat, it connects directly to how freely energy moves through the neck and upper chest.

When the chest collapses and the shoulders round forward, Vishuddha Chakra often becomes restricted along with the body. Sphinx Pose gently reverses that pattern. As the sternum lifts and the collarbones broaden, space opens along the throat and the energy of the fifth chakra begins to flow more freely.

Bringing It Into Your Daily Yoga Practice

Begin in Makarasana to settle the breath. Then draw the forearms beneath the shoulders and rise slowly into Sphinx Pose. Hold for five to ten steady breaths, keeping the Throat Chakra long and the gaze soft. Notice what shifts in the body and in the mind.

David Swenson teaches that every posture has something to offer, regardless of its difficulty level. Sphinx Pose is proof of that.
