Twists and Backbends: Balancing Half Lord of the Fishes Pose and Bridge

In yoga, balance isn’t just about standing on one leg. It’s also about balancing the types of movements you do: forward folds with backbends, strength with softness, effort with ease. Two shapes that complement each other beautifully are half lord of the fishes pose and Bridge Pose.

One is a seated twist that wrings out the spine and invites introspection. The other is a gentle backbend that opens the chest and front body. Together, they make a simple but powerful pairing for a healthy, responsive spine.

Half Lord of the Fishes Pose: Twisting with Awareness

Half lord of the fishes pose (Ardha Matsyendrasana) is a classic seated twist.

How to practice:

  1. Sit with both legs extended.
  2. Bend your right knee and place your right foot outside your left thigh.
  3. Optionally bend your left knee and bring the left foot near your right hip.
  4. Inhale to sit tall, lengthening your spine upward.
  5. Place your right hand on the floor behind you, and hug or hook your left arm around your right knee.
  6. Exhale to gently twist to the right, turning your gaze over the shoulder.

Stay for 5–8 breaths, then switch sides. This pose helps mobilize the spine, massage the abdominal area, and bring your attention inward.

Bridge Pose: Opening the Front Body

Many students search for “yoga poses bridge” when looking for accessible backbends that don’t feel overwhelming. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) is often one of the first.

How to practice:

  1. Lie on your back with knees bent, feet hip-width apart.
  2. Press your feet into the mat and slowly lift your hips.
  3. Keep your knees tracking over your ankles.
  4. Optionally interlace your fingers under your back and roll your shoulders beneath you.

Hold for a few breaths, then lower slowly. Among common yoga poses bridge variations, you can place a block under the sacrum for a more restorative version.

Putting Them Together in Your Yoga Practice

Try twisting first with half lord of the fishes pose to create space along the spine, then follow with Bridge Pose to open the front body and strengthen the back. This simple sequence offers both detoxifying twist and heart-opening backbend, helping you step off the mat feeling clearer, lighter, and more balanced.
